Summer time is here!

posted May 28, 2015, 10:08 PM by Jason Brunken   [ updated May 28, 2015, 10:22 PM ]

The regular school year has drawn to a close, and now we are on to Summer Extension in ASLA. Unfortunately, due to low enrollment and available staff, we were not able to offer an ASLA Summer Camp this year, but we have an awesome month of June ready for our summer ASLA students. Our first and second graders will be exploring the world of American Tall Tales as they learn about the genre, American geography and history, and some of the most iconic characters in American folklore like Johnny Appleseed, Paul Bunyan, and Pecos Bill. The older students will be exploring the world of Norse, or Viking, Mythology. All the kids know Thor and Loki from the new Marvel Avengers movies, but did you know that Marvel comics creator Stan Lee got much of his original inspiration form Ancient mythology, especially Greek (Wonder Woman) and Norse (Thor and Loki) myths. Students will delve into the historical and mythological realms of the Vikings and learn about the fascinating characters and stories that populate it.

Congratulations once again to our 6th grade ASLA graduates this year: Eugene, Ellen, Kent, Sean, Jefferson, Naomi, and Joyce. We wish them the best as they take the next step of their academic careers.

Don't forget to read this month's ASLA Principal's Note to learn about great what's going one and some great tips for keeping cool and well-read this summer as well as where to find great educational apps to kill the time during summer heat and travel.

posted May 5, 2015, 8:13 PM by Jason Brunken   [ updated May 5, 2015, 8:13 PM ]

Hi, parents. May is here, which means the school year is almost over. I know the kids have had a lot of fun this year and learned so much. As we wrap up the year, each class will be focusing on final activities that will review and fortify important knowledge gained throughout this school year. Our Kindergarteners and Sixth Graders are all hard at work preparing for graduation which will mark the end of a very special journey for them. Also coming up this month, Open House. We invite you to come in to your child's classroom this week on Tuesday/Wednesday to see a presentation of your child's work. Fifth and sixth grade Open House will e on May 5th while all other classes will be on May 6th. Early Bird parents should come at 2:30. Science parents can stay for a presentation at 3:00. All other classes will old Open House from 6:00-6:30. We look forward to seeing you.

Below is the Principal's Note for May with some helpful reminders, reading recommendations, and useful tips and resources for you and your child. Have a great May!

Coming up in April! (and ASLA Principal's Note)

posted Apr 1, 2015, 7:35 PM by Jason Brunken

Well, March was over quickly. It was great to see all of our amazing ASLA parents come in for parent-teacher conferences this past week. The awesome support you give our teachers is what drives our success.

April begins this week and with it comes some springtime fun. On Friday, April 2, we close out the Reading Challenge with the Annual Reading Challenge Finale. Students will find out who won and enjoy some pizza and fun instead of their regular classes. The coming week is the always popular ASLA Picnic. We will be preparing for that next week on Thursday and hope to see all of our ASLA students on Saturday April 11 for the Picnic.

Towards the end of April, we will be doing our annual service project. Happy Kids's service projects are a time we teach our students about giving back and helping others. This year we are focusing on the environment for Earth Day and how we can all help by reducing, reusing, and recycling the resources we use and the waste we make. More about this activity later.

Happy New Year and January Principal's Note

posted Jan 6, 2015, 6:56 PM by Jason Brunken   [ updated Jan 6, 2015, 6:56 PM ]

Happy New Year! We've finished first semester. That's right. The school year is already half over. It really is amazing how fast time can fly when you are working with such great students. I hope everyone had a happy and safe Christmas and New Year.

Below is the Principal's Note for January. Please take a minute to read it. Inside is a great tip for helping your child snack right, a wonderful online resource for Lego fans, and a wonderful series of books I know your children will love. There are no major school events or holidays coming up this month, but you can be a big help by reminding your children to do their best at Happy Kids and make time for independent English reading outside of class.

Thank you for another great year of love and support. Let's have a great January and 2015!

Grade 3's digital comic strips

posted Dec 8, 2014, 6:54 AM by Jason Brunken   [ updated Dec 9, 2014, 6:56 PM ]

Our Grade 3 students were hard at work last week working on their digital storytelling skills. The assignment? Tell a story in the form of a comic strip. While light on words, comic strips are an effective way to teach students about story structure and develop early story writing skills. The comic format forces students to focus on the properly sequencing events and visualizing the action. They can also help with teaching students to use dialogue and action to show character traits as opposed to simply telling the audience.

Below are the final comic strips published using www.storyboardthat.com. Click the pictures to view the full-sized versions. Enjoy!

December ASLA Principal's Note

posted Dec 3, 2014, 7:15 PM by Jason Brunken

Happy December! Christmas is a mere three weeks away. Does your family have anything special planned? We hope so. Christmas is a time for being together with family and expressing your love for each other and hope for the future. Take some time to plan something special if you can.

At Happy Kids, we have a few special events going on this month. We of course have our Day Program Christmas Concert on the 16th (so no school for ASLA kids on that day). We also will have our annual class photos with the Christmas tree. I know the kids are looking forward to the candy canes.

Don't forget Christmas Break! There will be no school from December 22-27. Yes, we will be closed for the added school day of the 27th. To make up the day, we will have a regular class schedule on January 2. Don't forget to mark your calendars.

Please take some time to read this month's ASLA Principal's Note. It is full of great tips, recommendations ,and news about the program. Happy Holidays!
