Hi, parents. May is here, which means the school year is almost over. I know the kids have had a lot of fun this year and learned so much. As we wrap up the year, each class will be focusing on final activities that will review and fortify important knowledge gained throughout this school year. Our Kindergarteners and Sixth Graders are all hard at work preparing for graduation which will mark the end of a very special journey for them. Also coming up this month, Open House. We invite you to come in to your child's classroom this week on Tuesday/Wednesday to see a presentation of your child's work. Fifth and sixth grade Open House will e on May 5th while all other classes will be on May 6th. Early Bird parents should come at 2:30. Science parents can stay for a presentation at 3:00. All other classes will old Open House from 6:00-6:30. We look forward to seeing you.
Below is the Principal's Note for May with some helpful reminders, reading recommendations, and useful tips and resources for you and your child. Have a great May!
April begins this week and with it comes some springtime fun. On Friday, April 2, we close out the Reading Challenge with the Annual Reading Challenge Finale. Students will find out who won and enjoy some pizza and fun instead of their regular classes. The coming week is the always popular ASLA Picnic. We will be preparing for that next week on Thursday and hope to see all of our ASLA students on Saturday April 11 for the Picnic.
Towards the end of April, we will be doing our annual service project. Happy Kids's service projects are a time we teach our students about giving back and helping others. This year we are focusing on the environment for Earth Day and how we can all help by reducing, reusing, and recycling the resources we use and the waste we make. More about this activity later.
Don't forget to read read this month's Principal's Note below. Have a great April!
Happy Kids will be closed February 14 until March 2 for the Lunar New Year holidays. Please call us with any questions. Below is my Principal's Note for February. There is some great information inside. Don't forget to take a minute to read it.
Below is the Principal's Note for January. Please take a minute to read it. Inside is a great tip for helping your child snack right, a wonderful online resource for Lego fans, and a wonderful series of books I know your children will love. There are no major school events or holidays coming up this month, but you can be a big help by reminding your children to do their best at Happy Kids and make time for independent English reading outside of class.
Thank you for another great year of love and support. Let's have a great January and 2015!
Our Grade 3 students were hard at work last week working on their digital storytelling skills. The assignment? Tell a story in the form of a comic strip. While light on words, comic strips are an effective way to teach students about story structure and develop early story writing skills. The comic format forces students to focus on the properly sequencing events and visualizing the action. They can also help with teaching students to use dialogue and action to show character traits as opposed to simply telling the audience.
Below are the final comic strips published using www.storyboardthat.com. Click the pictures to view the full-sized versions. Enjoy!
At Happy Kids, we have a few special events going on this month. We of course have our Day Program Christmas Concert on the 16th (so no school for ASLA kids on that day). We also will have our annual class photos with the Christmas tree. I know the kids are looking forward to the candy canes.
Don't forget Christmas Break! There will be no school from December 22-27. Yes, we will be closed for the added school day of the 27th. To make up the day, we will have a regular class schedule on January 2. Don't forget to mark your calendars.
